General Description:
John is an eleven-year veteran of the IS/computing industry.
Currently employed as a UNIX/Solaris systems administrator and troubleshooter
for Genuity Solutions, Inc., he is continually working on expanding his already
broad knowledge of computers and internetworking. He is recognized by his junior
co-workers as a mentor, sharing his knowledge of not only technical issues,
but how to interact with customers and manage expectations. Recently, he earned
his Sun Certified System Administrator title.
Previously, he worked as a product manager for a consumer
electronics/computing manufacturer, but has over 8 years of experience managing
first, second, and third tier support for desktop and network environments for
customers, including a large site in southern Scottsdale, in hardware and software
development environments. His areas of expertise range widely from supporting
desktop Macintoshes and Windows 95/NT Workstation machines to troubleshooting
SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4 access and routing issues. He has installed and configured
web servers, mail servers, and FTP servers on Sun/Solaris, Linux, and Macintoshes,
as well as implemented database-to-web solutions. In addition to his experience
with Genuity, PAR Technologies, and Sprint Paranet, he worked as a freelance
consultant for businesses newly introduced to the Internet, and spent almost
three years as a training instructor for CompUSA.
His hobbies include working with his home-based network,
running a Solaris-based firewall/mailserver (ported entirely over from his previous
Linux-based firewall on a surplus AlphaStation after a catastrophic hardware
failure) through a broadband DSL connection, and tracking down spammers. He
is a contributor to various technical discussion groups and mailing lists, including
news.admin.net-abuse.email, the SANS www.incidents.org website, and DShield.org's
mailing list.
Aside from computer work, he is a member of the Society
for Creative Anachronism, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicating to re-living
and teaching about life in the Middle Ages. His focus is on twelfth through
sixteenth century Scotland, especially the Highlands.
Projects and Employment Experience:
- Product manager, digital camera products
for consumer computing needs. Tasks include all details of taking
a product from concept to market, including working with
engineering, programmers, technical writers, marketing personnel,
and graphic artists in all facets of creating a product, manuals,
software drivers, and marketing efforts.
- Lead technical staff member heading the
effort to migrate all MS Mail for Macintosh users to Netscape
Communicator Mail. Tasks included troubleshooting new builds and
testing them under a User Acceptance Pilot, writing installation
procedures, and coordinating the support personnel from four
different departments. In addition, writing procedures for the
installation and use of Netscape Communicator for the Windows
95/NT users.
- Lead technical staff member heading the
effort to provide methods and documentation for all Macintosh
users to move their data to Windows NT Workstations.
- Desktop Technical Lead for a project's
Network Support Team. This effort tied together forty Macintoshes,
four Sun SPARC20s, and six Netis PCs running Windows 95. This
network was connected to several other partner sites on a Virtual
Private Network via NSC-1 Encrypting Routers through the Internet,
saving the project thousands of dollars in point-to-point costs
over two years. All of the Macintoshes on the project were also
capable of switching to the regular in-plant LAN with a simple
10BaseT A/B switch (one requirement of the project was physical
isolation of the network).
- Webmaster for three major government
contract projects. Each project required a web site for data
exchange with partnered sites, external to the local firewall.
Using existing hardware, new web servers were set up at a minimum
of expense as a stopgap measure until funding could be obtained
for "full-size" servers running Solaris or Linux.
- Consultant to numerous internal projects,
including the negotiation of a new Service Level Agreement with
MCI for the T1 line used by the web servers, network traffic
analysis, and firewall/proxy troubleshooting.

scheduling functions.
